| About the Ben Hur Directors Staff: |
Originally called the BEDOUINS, the Director's Staff was formally established on 9 November 1921. The name was later changed to the Director's Staff to avoid confusion with mounted
units from other Texas temples. No matter what they are called, the meaning and function of the Director's Staff has not changed.
The objective and function of the Director's Staff is "For the advancement of Shrinedom and more particularly for the purpose of perfecting and maintaining a good organization for doing the stage, electrical and mechanical work incident to the second and third section of the Shrine Ceremonials in the Oasis of Austin, in the most perfect and acceptable manner." In other words, the Director's Staff works for the Director of Ben Hur Temple in putting on the "Hot Sands" or second section of the Shrine Ceremonial. As one of our Nobles put it, "We make Shriners so crippled children can walk."
The Director's Staff takes part in all Temple functions including parades, dances, the circus, and hospital benefit drives.
Joining the Director's Staff is relatively simple. All you have to do is fill out a petition and turn it in to the Secretary. The petition is voted on at a regular meeting. The new Novice is required to make 75% of all stated and called meetings and work sessions. Excused absences do not count against you. You must participate in 2 Shrine Ceremonials and serve a probationary year as a Novice before you are eligible to be a regular member. A "short" initiation is held for all qualified Novices, and the "New" members are installed with all privileges and prerogatives of regular members.
You are cordially invited to join with us at all stated meetings, after all Temple meetings, and at social occasions. If you are interested in serving the Temple and Shrinedom; if you are handy with your hands, artistically inclined, and have a sense of humor; if you like hard work and good companionship -- then the Director's Staff may be for you. |
