| About the Ben Hur Clowns: |
The Ben Hur Shrine was instituted on October 8, 1891 with its charter dated August 15, 1892. Some 18 years later, May 6, 1910, at a stated meeting, Noble A.J. Eilers moved that "A committee be appointed to organize a string and brass band and that sufficient money be appropriated with which to purchase instruments and uniforms." Thus did Ben Hur's oldest unit, the Band, come into existence.
The band grewIn years past, members of Ben Hur's other Units, especially the Director's Staff and the Band, would put on their clown make-up and outrageous outfits, and appear at parades and other Shrine functions. In 1957, a permanent Unit was formed, and it was called SREKOJ. SREKOJ is JOKERS spelled backwards.
This is one of the most active and visible Units of the Shrine, participating in parades, hospital visitations, State and National Competitions, the Shrine Circus, and many public relations events.
We think there is no better way to advertise Shrinedom and to get real satisfaction from the smile of a child than to be a clown. If you love hard work and can spend many hours of your time entertaining young and old, then the SREKOJ Unit may be the one for you. The smiles you put on people's face give you a wonderful feeling that can last you a lifetime.
Please visit a member if you are interested in becoming a member of this most active unit. We welcome your interest and will be happy to go over the process of initiation and any other questions you might have. |
