| About the Ben Hur Chanters: |
The Chanter units in Shrine Temples were originally organized to perform the chants which are an integral part of the first section of the ceremonial initiation. They were composed of Nobles who enjoyed singing and the fellowship of other Nobles who enjoyed music. As time passed, the Chanter units expanded their activity to providing vocal entertainment at many and varied affairs.
The Ben Hur Chanters are typical of Chanters units throughout the world. Our chants are still an important part of the ceremonials, and now we find ourselves performing, up request, at a variety of functions. We join other Units in entertaining before the ceremonials, sing at several retirement homes at Christmas time, and at Masonic lodges and civic organizations in the area.
The Chanters join the Shrine at parades, having a float which is equipped with a public address system to augment the Chanter voices and allow the spectators to hear the singing. We also compete with Chanter groups from other Temples at the Annual All state convention, historically quite successfully, we might add.
Ben Hur's Chanters are active through the years and we can always use new members. If a new Noble or a member of the Nobility not attached to another Unit likes to sing, and he needn't be a trained musician, we welcome him to join us as we rehearse every Monday evening at 5:00. We work hard, but we have fun and our ladies come to rehearsal with us and enjoy an hour of good fellowship. |
