| About the Ben Hur Caravaneers: |
The Ben Hur Shrine Caravaneer Unit was originally organized in 1951. Early duties consisted of assisting the Divan and generally helping out at Ben Hur Shrine functions in which all Shrine Units and the Nobility at large were involved. As it became obvious that a need existed for a Shrine Unit to be responsible for maintaining and towing the Ben Hur Divan float to and during parades and exhibitions as well as to be definitely counted upon to act as sort of "Extended Divan Aides", at Texas Shrine Association annual convention and events competition, the name of the Unit was changed to CARAVANEERS and those duties were assumed. It was no longer necessary for the Divan to wonder each year who would take care of all the extra support activities cropping up at conventions and exhibitions and who would tow and maintain the float for parades.
Obviously, the Caravaneers are a working unit and not entirely a social one, although they play hard, too. Prospective members of the Caravaneer unit should be aware that they will be called upon frequently to make themselves useful, especially during parades and called work sessions. In recent years it has become tradition for the incoming Potentate to request that a capable and knowledgeable Caravaneer be on the Appointive Divan as Parade Marshal. Among other things, the Parade Marshal attends all parades and is responsible for the line-up and orderly entry of all Ben Hur Shrine Units participating in the parade.
Attendance at and participation in parades becomes second nature to a Caravaneer. Caravaneers must attend at least 75% of Shrine activities, including Parades, stated meetings and called work sessions, as well as pay all dues and assessments, to remain "in good standing".
An initiation fee of $20.00 is charged each prospective Caravaneer upon his application for membership in the Unit. Annual dues are $10 .00. Assessments are made for entertainment purposes only. Dances, garage sales, and sale of Circus advertising provide Unit funds. |
