| About the Ben Hur Band: |
The Ben Hur Shrine was instituted on October 8, 1891 with its charter dated August 15, 1892. Some 18 years later, May 6, 1910, at a stated meeting, Noble A.J. Eilers moved that "A committee be appointed to organize a string and brass band and that sufficient money be appropriated with which to purchase instruments and uniforms." Thus did Ben Hur's oldest unit, the Band, come into existence.
The band grew and developed into a much appreciated organization. It has been involved in numerous Temple activities and on many occasions, has proudly led the Shrine Temple parades up Congress Avenue. The Shrine Band has also performed in concerts for Shrine functions, Masonic gatherings and civic meetings. The Band has been home to amateur, semi-professional and professional musicians.
Today's band gives its members the opportunity to be a closely knit part of Ben Hur Shrine Temple with many occasions to participate in Shrine and civic activities. Among these rewarding activities is the annual Shrine Circus, the toy drive for underprivileged children, service in Brackenridge Hospital and numerous parades in Texas communities.
Band rehearsals are held each Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm at the Shrine Temple. Fellowship and friendship are as much a part of each rehearsal as the music.
To be a member of Ben Hur Shrine Band, you should be able to read music, play a band instrument, faithfully participate in the band's activities and attend rehearsals. |
